スカボローは英国北部にある港町で、この歌はそこでの定期市を歌った民謡です。
でも、もともとこの歌が生まれたのはこの地域からではなくて、
他の地域から発生したようです。民謡なので歌詞の方はかなりいろいろなバージョンが
ありますが、なんと言ってもこの音楽を有名にしたのは、
サイモン＆ガーファンクルの「スカボロー・フェア/詠唱」でしょう。
この曲が映画『卒業』で挿入歌として使われたことで、今では全世界的に聞きなれた
旋律となっています。若い世代には日本通運のＣＭ曲としての方が有名かも…。
歌詞の中に繰り返しでてくるハーブの名前はあまり意味はなくて
『オマジナイ』みたいなものなんですって〜。
